SUBREGION I

BACKGROUND FOR THE CROP

The 2018 growing season developed under cold weather (records show that frost hit 18 times), with monthly rains below average. It seems, though, that crop growth was very good. Crop health was also solid.  There was no real incidence of leaf and stem rust even though yellow rust infection was important in some varieties, as well as the presence of necrotic spots due to yellow spot and bacteriosis.
Almost 100% of the wheat planted in the northeast of Santa Fe was from short cycle cultivars. Planting started in June and harvest took place by end of October. Average minimum and maximum temperatures from June to October were 8.8 °C and 20.8 °C, respectively. Rains were very scarce.  Only 63 mm of rains had fallen when the number of grains per surface unit was defined.
Area yield was very good, ranging from 2,200 to 2,500 kg/h, with good physical quality. Quality-wise, protein, and gluten content were high.
