SUBREGION III

BACKGROUND FOR THE CROP

Rainfall from February to April reloaded the soil profile and favored crop implantation and growth. Mid temperatures were above the 1934-2016 average, all year round. The most considerable differences were in winter: June (+1,8°C), July (+2,5°C), August (+2,2°C) and September (+1,2°C),  which, associated with frequent rains from August to October favored the early occurrence of foliar diseases and ears, from anthesis onward. Grain formation and filling were under no water stress, with almost normal temperatures in October and November.

Following data published by the Entre Rios Board of Trade (SIBER Bolsacer - Reports) - www.bolsacer.org.ar), the province production in 2017 declined 11% compared to last growing season, with a lower average yield of 2,523 kg/h.

Different rusts negatively impacted on yields. Stripe, yellow or lineal rust (Puccinia striiformis) and the orange leaf rust (Puccinia triticina) started at tillering or early stem extension. The infestation was from moderate to significant, depending on the cultivar susceptibility. Fungicides were required in many plots.  Wheat black or stem rust (Puccinia triticina) occurred as of grain filling.  Weather conditions in September and October favored a mild attack of stem fusarium and, again, severity depended on cultivar susceptibility.

All of the above leads us to conclude that in this agricultural cycle, wheat yields were affected by diseases, based on cultivar susceptibility and/or tolerance, as well as on the timely application of fungicides.
