SUBREGION IV

BACKGROUND FOR THE CROP

Planting was with good water availability and run very smoothly.  However, excessive rains when long cycles were planted resulted in delays, from June to July. Yields were lower in short-cycle wheats, due to pondings and N washout.

Delayed planting did not affect heading since July to September temperatures were above average. Heading occurred about 5 to 7 days earlier in specific cultivars while tillering declined for the same reasons. No strong frosts were recorded at seedling and tillering. Frosts were below average.

The incidence of foliar diseases was relevant due to predisposing factors and new races of wheat rust. From early September to early November, new races of Puccinia striiformis attacked the crop, affecting cultivars that were healthy in past crop seasons. Farmers had to apply fungicides up to three times. Leaf rust (Puccinia triticina) was scarce and limited to very susceptible cultivars. On the other hand, stem rust (Puccinia graminis) appeared by mid- November and required control measures.  The early occurrence of yellow rust and the failure to apply fungicides reduced yields, resulting in low test weight.

As of September, rains were regular and in October, they reached average. In some areas, however, by late October, water scarcity became apparent and reached its peak in early December. Nevertheless, after heading, temperatures were cool and mitigated the negative impact of the potential drought.

This region featured mid to high yields. Differences depended upon rainfall and technologies applied. Plots adequately fertilized yielded above 6,000 kg/h. By contrast, soil depth and low quality resulted in yields ranging from 2,500 to 5,000 kg/h, with many different PH values, good 1000-grain weight, and nice color.
