SUBREGION NOA

BACKGROUND FOR THE CROP

Wheat planted acres were expected to increase in the 2017/2018 wheat crop season, compared with the previous year.   Sowing started mid-April and continued until mid-June. In Tucuman, the delay in soybean harvest led to late planting in some plots.   In different departments of Salta and Tucuman, planting started under good soil moisture, thanks to summer rains.

Wheat evolution was variable, depending on irrigation and/or flooding.  The first two weeks of August anticipated high temperatures, leading to accelerated maturity. Lack of rains resulted in yields below 600 or 700 kg in plots under dryland farming. Harvest was impossible.

Pests and diseases were not a problem, except in late-planted plots that were affected by weeds.

Frosts were of different intensity; yields and quality were severely impacted in some plots, some were even lost.

In Salta, harvest started in mid-October and finished the first week of December, with yields ranging from 800 to 1,800 kg/h.  In Tucuman, yields were variable, ranging from 600 to 700 kg/h, with plots reaching 3,000 and other parcels attaining only 1,100 to 1,200 kg/h.
