BACKGROUND FOR THE CROP

 

Record rainfall led to ponding and flooding that affected crops in the lower portions of plots.

Rains in mid June and mid July delayed planting, which affected tassel formation in some cultivars that needed low temperatures. Temperatures from July to October were above-average, approx. 1.1°C daily. Therefore, plant tassels came out sooner.

No frosts were registered during planting, tillering and at critical periods.

Excess rainfall at tillering washed out soils fertilized with nitrogen; a new N application was required. Second N applications led to lower grain protein content.

October and November rains were about average but temperatures were above average. From end November to harvest, rains were scarce and temperatures not very high. Early in December, all cultivars had their physiological maturity without significant yield losses.

Foliar diseases incidence was high. Leaf rust (Puccinia triticina) incidence was high in susceptible varieties. Stem rust (Puccinia graminis) responded well to timely applications of foliar chemicals. Early development of stem rust not minimized with the timely application of fungicides led to lower yields and lower test weights. On occasions, test weight was below 60 kg/hl.

Yields ranged from 3,000 to 6,000 kg/ha, with different test weights, good 1000-grain weight and nice color.

This region featured mid to high yields. Differences depended upon rainfall, technologies applied, environments and disease control measures.

In this sub region the wheat production was 1.860.101 tons., the 13,5 % of the national total. Were sampled 109.297 tons., the 5,88 % of the sub region production.
