SUBREGION III

BACKGROUND FOR THE CROP

February rains were above-average and reloaded the soil profile in the first months of 2014. No water stress was observed in May and June, even though rainfall was below-average. October featured less rainfall than expected. Total precipitations along the growing cycle were above-average.

Temperatures also were above-average. September and October temperatures were 1.8 and 3.4°C above-average, which shortened the grain filling period and affected grain quality.

Stem rust incidence and severity was high: over 60% of the susceptible or moderately susceptible cultivars were affected. Some leaf rust and ear fusarium were also observed.

Therefore, wheat was affected by biotic factors (mainly stem rust) and temperatures above-average in the critical period, which led to low yields and low commercial quality.

Based on information issued by the Entre Rios Board of Trade (Bolsa de Cereales de Entre Ríos), average production increased by 3.6% due to increased acreage but average yield was 9.8% lower.

Average yield in the province was 2,480 kg/ha, down 268 kg from previous season, which featured an average yield of 2,748 kg/ha (Source: SIBER, www.bolsacer.org.ar).
