SUBREGION NOA

BACKGROUND FOR THE CROP

In the province of Tucuman and neighboring areas, 80,000 ha were planted, representing more acreage than the previous year.

Abundant rains in months before planting as well as in April and May were very important. Planting was delayed since soybean harvest was delayed by rains, a very infrequent situation in this region. Not enough seed was available and farmers had to plant long cycle varieties in short cycle dates. N fertilizer was applied in insufficient doses.

Leaf rust and yellow spot appeared very early. Winter was warm and absence of low temperatures affected yields. Aphids, trips and mites were timely controlled. Yields were acceptable and very variable, from 600 to 2, 300 kg/ha depending on the plot, seed variety and technology applied. Harvest was uneventful.

In the provinces of Santa and Jujuy, where most of the plots are cropped under irrigation, yields ranged from 1,600 to 2,600 kg/ha. Hail events south of Rosario de la Frontera, south and east of Metan led to yield losses. Some plots suffered from little moisture and high temperatures all along the season and therefore presented such low yields that they were not harvested.

West of Santiago del Estero, harvest was quickly completed with no rains, very high temperatures and constant north wind.
