SUBREGION III

BACKGROUND FOR THE CROP

Fall rains in the 2015/2016 growing season were insufficient to fill the soil profile. Seedling and crop growth were therefore affected, especially in late planted fields. The critical period for most cultivars is September and October, when rains were again scarce. Temperatures were above average all along the season, except in October, when average dropped .5°C. The photothermal unit requirements, that is temperature and light influence on physiological processes, were below average 50% of the days. When added to the very insufficient rains in September and October, these are the factors that negatively impacted on wheat potential yield and grain quality.

Foliar fungal diseases attacked the crop: stem and leaf rust mainly, with infestation levels slightly below those recorded in the previous season. Approximately 50% of the cultivars were considered susceptible or moderately susceptible. Some genotypes of the wheat varieties available in the market adapt better to the the agroecological conditions of subregion III.

Following data published by the Entre Rios Board of Trade (SIBER Bolsacer Reports), average production dropped 28% compared to last year volumes: there was a decrease in the area planted of 39% and average yield increased 19%. The provincial average yield for the 2015/2016 wheat season was 2,956 kg/h. Last year, it was 2,480 kg/h.
