SUBREGION V SOUTH

BACKGROUND FOR THE CROP

The first quarter of the year was very humid, which allowed the soil water recovery. Such accumulation of water permitted sowing a larger surface and the first sow implanting well.

From April to September, the rains were scarce, and with a great variation among the different areas. Therefore, and also due to the producers economic reasons, little or moderate use of fertilizers was done in this sub-region. The period fall-winter was mild, with frosts between April and September, and absolute minimum temperatures not surpassing the -7ºC. Spring had no elevated average temperatures, but it was dry.

In October, it rained according to the historical average of the month, but the rains concentrated on the last 10 days, which were a little late for the crops that were flowering.

From then on, the soil water became again a limit and the availability of water was kept under the water requirements of the crop to obtain a good harvest.

In general, the rains of the region were of between 100 and 150 mm, which are inferior to the historic average.

Better technology and early sowing favored some wheat lots that reached performances of 3300 kg/ha in Huanguelén and 2900 in Coronel Suárez. In the later sowings, the performance was lower, and there were problems with diseases in the wheat crops.

The harvest presented a great variation in the sub-region, with performances of between 1000 kg/ha and 3300 kg/ha.

In this sub region the wheat production was 2,497,087 tons., the 17.2% of the national total.
Were sampled 155,600 tons., the 6.2% of the sub region production.
