SUBREGION V SOUTH

BACKGROUND FOR THE CROP​

 
The wheat growing season started when “El Niño” was in full swing. By May 1, accumulated rain water (450 mm) had saturated the soil profile. Fallow presented better conditions than the previous season. Farmers were more willing to use technology and doubted between more production or better quality wheat. Barley, so far, has been an option considered by farmers to cope with price uncertainty.​

Some excess moisture in the soil delayed planting in certain areas. Furthermore, planting was impossible in other regions such as San Miguel and Puan.

By mid-year or in August, most of the wheat acreage had already received more rainfall than its usual yearly average.​​

Precipitations finished in September. and the soil profile started to show water deficits.​

By late September, frosts had caused varying degrees of damage.​

The crop critical period fell in September, October and November: little rain, high temperatures by the end of the period damaged late planted cultivars or early wheat at grain filling.

Nevertheless, yields were good. Fertilizer applications did not match crop needs; therefore, protein content was only slightly above last year records.​

In this sub region the wheat production was 3.052.040 tons., the 16,6% of the national total. Were sampled 236.156 tons., the  7,​7​% of the sub region production.
