SUBREGION V NORTH

BACKGROUND FOR THE CROP

Planting started in May and continued until mid-July. First, intermediate to long cycle varieties were preferred. Short cycle cultivars were planted last. Pre-planting rains provided proper soil moisture levels and fostered sowing. However, to the south of Cordoba, seeds could not be sown in some plots because there was too much water in the soil.

There was an increase in the number of fertilized plots: At planting, DAP and MAP applications (diammonium and ammonium phosphate) as well as triple superphosphate (TPS) and urea (UAN) at sowing or booting.

Yellow spot was the most widespread disease although there were also attacks of stripe rust roya, wheat leaf rust, and stem rust. Some areas reported cases of aphids at booting and heading.

Soil moisture was homogeneous along tillering, stem extension, heading and most of the grain filling period. Cool temperatures favored grain filling with the resulting high test weight and adequate grain yield.

Harvest was in December, a bit late due to insufficient soil moisture.

Yields ranged from 3,000 to 3,500 kg/ha.

In this sub region the wheat production was 2.876.198 tons., the 15,7% of the national total. Were sampled 188.624 tons., the 6,6% of the sub region production.
