SUBREGION NOA

BACKGROUND FOR THE CROP

Towards mid May wheat planting began with good water availability in the soil.

Rains and drizzles favored some fields; others resorted to sprinkler or flood irrigation to improve seedling conditions.

Very little frost and few low temperature days were not unusual this year. There were warm days in June, July and August as well as in September and October, which led to early growth and development of different wheat varieties in the provinces of Salta and Jujuy. .

Rainfed fields were affected by the high temperatures while irrigated fields were not. Therefore, some wheat matured earlier and harvest began in mid-October and ended early in December.

Yields ranged from 1,400 to 2,600 kg/h. Yields in some fields were so poor that they were not harvested. A very low number of plots exceeded 2,800 kg/h.p>

Wheat quality was variable, ranging from good to average or poor. Rains in the last stage and during harvest resulted in white belly and sprouted grains. Weather conditions did not favor wheat.

The area planted in Salta was 92,442 hectares; 11,900 were not harvested but 80,542 were properly harvested. The area planted in the province of Jujuy was 3,435 hectares.
